Course description

This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of Stata®. It will focus on the minimum set of commands everyone should know to organize their own work. Specific topics include data-reporting, data-management, formatting and graphics. By the end of this one-day course, the student will be capable of using Stata® version 8/9 proficiently.

Participants

The course is intended for anyone who wishes or needs to use Stata. No previous knowledge of Stata or of statistics is required, although familiarity with Microsoft Windows will be assumed. Students will gain the familiarity with Stata by practicing.

Preliminary outline of the course

Morning session

  • Let's get started with Stata interface and windows
  • Basics in Stata
  • How to get help
  • Summary statistics of continuous variable
  • Descriptive statistics of a categorical variables
  • Summary statistics of a continuous variable by a categorical variable
  • Graph the distribution of continuous and categorical variables
  • Two-way scatter plot
  • Import/Export dataset in different format (Excel, SAS, ASCII)

Afternoon session

  • Keep a log-file
  • Missing values
  • Generate a new variable
  • Operators (Arithmetic, logical, string, relational)
  • Rename a variable
  • Replace and recode an existing variable
  • Categorize continuous variables based on quintiles
  • How to drop and keep observations and variables
  • Sorting the dataset
  • Repeating commands by sub-groups of the data
  • Use Stata as hand calculator

  9:00 - 12:00 Morning Session
12:00 - 13:00 Lunch
13:00 - 16:00 Afternoon Session

The students will have their hands on a keyboard with Stata running troughout the learning sessions. Each learning session will give equal weight to tutorials and practical exercises.

Lecture notes, datasets, exercises, and solutions will be available over the internet for the students.
